By David Woods

In April’s WNBA draft, the Indiana Fever were faced with a decision analogous to the one confronted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998. Not a day passes in which the Colts aren’t relieved they selected quarterback Peyton Manning instead of Ryan Leaf with the No. 1 pick. However, it will be months before anyone can evaluate whether the Fever were wise to select Tamika Catchings instead of Jackie Stiles with the No. 3 pick.

“I just hope someone picks me.” This is what Portland’s No. 1 draft pick (fourth overall), Jackie Stiles, said after the NCAA Tournament. Like the saying goes, “be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.” But this Kodak All-American is up for the challenge.

Jackie Stiles still has a hard time believing all that is swirling around her. Maybe because growing up in a town of 600 can’t prepare someone for celebrity. Maybe because this has all happened so fast. “I’m living a dream,” Stiles said.
